Bankruptcy Legal Aid Foundation (BLAF) is a nonprofit public benefit organization dedicated to providing access to lawful bankruptcy relief for individuals and families facing serious financial hardship. BLAF is organized as a 501(c)(3) charitable organization and operates exclusively for charitable and educational purposes.
The Foundation’s mission is to help qualifying Californians obtain relief under Chapter 7 of the United States Bankruptcy Code when financial circumstances make private legal representation unattainable.
Our Purpose
BLAF was established to serve individuals who are overwhelmed by debt, lack meaningful access to legal assistance, and have no reasonable alternative to navigating the bankruptcy process alone. The Foundation focuses its resources on cases where bankruptcy relief is appropriate, lawful, and likely to provide meaningful benefit.
Because charitable resources are limited, BLAF maintains strict eligibility standards and exercises careful screening to ensure responsible use of donated funds.
Who We Our
Our board includes experienced professionals in bankruptcly law, accounting, banking, and nonprofit governance.
What We Do
BLAF provides limited pro bono legal assistance in straightforward consumer Chapter 7 bankruptcy matters. Services may include case evaluation, preparation of bankruptcy filings, and representation through the Chapter 7 process, when appropriate.
BLAF does not provide business bankruptcy services, debt negotiation, litigation representation, or financial counseling outside the scope of bankruptcy law.
How We Operate
All requests for assistance are reviewed through a structured intake and legal screening process. Meeting eligibility criteria does not guarantee acceptance. Representation begins only after written confirmation of acceptance.
BLAF operates independently and does not engage in political activity or lobbying. Donations do not influence eligibility or case acceptance.
Commitment to Integrity
BLAF is committed to providing assistance with professionalism, dignity, and respect for the law. The Foundation upholds ethical standards, transparency, and prudent stewardship of charitable resources in all of its operations.
Equal Access
Bankruptcy Legal Aid Foundation does not discriminate on the basis of race, color, religion, sex, national origin, age, disability, or any other status protected by law.
